Step 4- Dissection!

Step 4 is all about the things that didn't work or could be improved on next time. This is where my anal tendencies abandon me. I really should write things down at this point, so when I revisit an idea in 6 months or so I can remember how I did it and what I need to change.

So although I am reasonably happy with how Milton turned out, there were a few details I thought could be improved on.

The shoes were a bit weird, I only made them from the front view. Next time I need to add sides and backs of shoe somehow as well.

Milton's hands - I liked the shape but sewing those weeny fingers was just ridiculous and the stitching looks pretty bad up close. Maybe I need to make mitten style hands.

I also think the joining seam (currently on one of Milton's back corners would be better in the middle of his back. It would be easier to sew for one thing and may make the back look more like two legs....

So armed with all this I made a new person. This was the person I thought of halfway through the making of Milton.

I think the shoes are a definite improvement.

I really love the puff sleeves and box pleats ( but I need to remember to start box pleats in the middle and work out if I want them to be centred properly....)

I like her less rectangular shape

I really want to love her,

but this face is just wrong!

So I tried this one - I like it much better, less pretty - I like the nose and mouth.....but I might lose those eyelashes......

  1. She's fabulous! I don't know how you keep on coming up with brilliant ideas! Her face is great - although maybe it is the heart lips that make it not quite perfect?

P.S. Ha Ha Trashy! Beat you today!

  2. Looking deeply, maybe her lips are a bit like a piggy nose (that's mean of me, sorry) but like I said I had to look very carefully. I like Milton's hands, even if the sewing is a pain. His girlfriend is really cute. I love the lace against the bright, shiny polka dots and her shoes too.

  3. What's with the glutton for punishment thing? Only since you ask - not because it was even VAGUELY obvious - I have put on my pedant hat too. My two cents is that I reckon she needs either the heart shaped lips or the smile 'line' but not both. Course she looks a very different Miltonette depending on which version you visualise.

  4. The gap between her lips and her 'chin' is short, the eyes and the freckles are perfect, the heart for the rosebud mouth could be shorter and wider? She's just adorable...

I think she's cute and wouldn't change anything really, but you did ask...

  5. I think she is pretty cute. Maybe her eyes are a bit close together? I always work my faces so that the eyes and mouth make an equilateral triangle when you join them up.

  6. I think her face is adorable! Her whole being is adorable!! I opened this post and my daughter happened to be with me (lying on the bed we are) and we both just squealed when we saw her!! She is perfect and so bloody cute it just aint funny!! Does this mean there will now be baby Milton's??

  7. Awww, she's just lovely! I like both noses, and do like her eyelashes too. She and Milton make a lovely couple - or have I made a terrible faux pas and she's his daughter?! x

  8. Hey do you think Milton and his new lady love might get together and have some offspring?

  9. Yeah..I agree with you...

I do feel very strongly, however, that she is NOT (I repeat, NOT) Milton's sweetheart. She is perhaps his sister, who answers his office phone and takes messages for him. "Good morning, Milton's Services, Melissa speaking, how can I help you?"

Her voice is clear and brisk, and yet remarkably sympathetic and understanding as she makes a note of your number and query: "Why, Ms. Ricrac, how lovely to hear from you again, how did that melted-down chip-packet handbag turn out in the end? Oh yes, I'm certain that Milton will be able to help you, yes... and your sewing machine will be running better than ever in no time. I'll give him the message as soon as he comes into the office for his morning tea."

  10. Well Jodie, I think she is adorable and have a preference for the heart shaped lips - but then again, I am a romantic and just want her to be all girly and flirtatious with Milton...LOL.

    Happy Easter.

  11. Hi Jodie! I LOVE the fabrics/vinyls you have used and the shoes are to die for! Gotta love those puff sleeves and vbox pleats too, so professional looking. Everyone has a different opinion - so long as you're happy that is all that matters. I think she's pretty darn amazing!

Ooh - I'll email you because I feel selfish taking up lots of space in the "comments" box!!!

  12. I love Milton's secretary - I feel she should be called Molly ("Good Morning, you've called Milton's Sewing Machine Repairs, this is Molly speaking"!).

Also prefer the second face but not sure about the eyes - maybe without the eyelashes, but with brown eyes and an iris (more like Milton's are).

Beautiful work - love reading about the creative process!

  15. Very cute Jodie, and just love those shoes!! I like Milton best though, maybe because I have met him and your "imperfections" really don't detract from him at all. Ayden said hello. He was buying bits for his Goodie when you saw him! Happy Easter sewing

  19. She is too cool! I love the red dress and the lace peeking out! Jodie, your imagination ROCKS! As somewhat of a obsessive, compulsive perfectionist type crafter, I understand your pain. You'll know when they are just right.... They are so cute together though. Great job!

  20. Wow! You're fast! I am the same way - in that when I get a project in mind I HAVE to get it done - NOW! Great job, they are both wonderful :)

  21. I think they make a lovely couple. I like her head shape a lot for her. But I love Milton's square head for him, it's such a Milton-ish head. And her shoes are fantastic.

  22. Aw Mrs Milton. She is cute. I put my finger over the eye lashes and you could be right there. I love her dress, could you make me one please?!!! : )

  23. They are very cute! Milton's hands are wonderful and Mrs. Milton is lovely just the she is made! He loves us that way!
    Happy Easter!

  24. Maybe we're all missing the mark here about the lady in red. Maybe she's the "other" woman in Milton's secret life. I imagine Mrs. Milton to be a bit frumpy, and our lady in red is definately not the frumpy type.

  25. ohh Jodie Milton has broken my heart. He has another woman!!! Boo Hoo. Seriously thought she is one good looking gal and I LOVE the eyelashes.

  26. Hahahahaha! Oh, you're so good for the soul! So what are you going to call her?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oh yes definitely not the Mrs Milton type with that dress!! I do so admire the bizarre workings of your brain - thanks for sharing funny lady. TTxxxx

  28. I just laughed myself silly over Eleanor's comment! As one who does not adapt well to change, I liked the first face a lot! It seems so high handed to just give a cute little face a big old nose, and replace her cute little rosebud mouth with a LINE. While on the subject of change, I liked Milton's glasses in red. :>}

  29. I have to agree with Eleanor, Jodie. I can definitely see the family resemblance!

And her shoes are just too cute...

  30. Oh, I love her Jodie!! I knew she'd be awesome. But, you know me, I like the pretty version the best! Her little red shoes are gorgeous!

  31. HIlarious! I love the idea of Milton and no name girl having babies! maybe it could be the result of an office affair? (I've got WAY too much time to think about this!) A steamy, sewing machine repair shop affair!

  32. Jodie, you amaze me in your talent. Such details. Thank you for sharing.

  33. Wow -- these are pretty cool. Those fabrics look like they'd be tough to fiddle with. Are they tough to work with? How big are these dolls?

Yeah, wow -- they really are awesome.

  34. Oh! A Miltoness! She's beautiful- although I loved her original pretty mouth lots :-) I'm particularly fond of that dress- I would wear that!! :-)

  38. She's so cute! I agree--the sleeves and shoes, and the pleated skirt: just darling.

And I love the bag in the next post--please post the tutorial! I'd love to see it! And then try to attempt making it :P.
