Reality therapy

O.K guys time to get tough.
Thanks so much for all those crazy comments about the gocco cages, but just in case you were thinking I am some sort of freaky uber crafter, you need to see some of the stuff that hasn't worked recently. I would hate to be here bloggin' under false pretences.
Exhibit A: Squares

OK, not so much and abject failure - this project just died of boredom and disinterest. I fussy cut 13 squares and then snowballed them and now......couldn't care less. They have been in this state at least a year and will NEVER be used. If you can use them please email and I will happily pop them in the post. (Yay they have a new home - I am guilt free)

Exhibit B: Hedgehog thingy

Ah poor little hedgehog, beheaded and disemboweled at least 8 times so far - but I am yet to give up this one ...it has potential. Maybe its the fur fabric I need to change - I hate fur fabric. Why did I even start with fur fabric? Who invented fur fabric?

Exhibit C: Dog? Rodent ?

Weird dog shaped softie - No potential, no hope . I should hang my head in softie shame for keeping this abomination alive for so long. Hidden in the bottom of the bin straight after this photo. Trust me, this thing has been tweaked so much that I forgot what I even started with. Goodbye Doggie., Was it meant to be a doggie?

Exhibit D: Birdish shaped blob

The softie hall of shame is a long one- The bird , just in case you couldn't tell. Got to this point and I didn't even add wings - it is just so BLAH !!! Nothing happening at all with this. Wrong wrong wrong fabric for a start and it is kinda flat bottomed like a boat - Maybe it is a boat? Why the bird??????? Well isn't it obvious. It was to go in the cage.....

(Brace yourselves)

Exhibit E: The cage

The less said about this monstrosity the better. By far the worst and most graphic photo today - In reality this project should be taken out and shot but I just want it to work so bad that I can't give up yet. It has been a disaster of boning and stabilisers and 5 million pins give or take.

It might need to go into the Hiatus basket (where all those projects go that have lost their appeal - your not quite ready to give up on them even though you know you should - you keep on living in hope that inspiration will return) . I have decided that its major problem at this point is that it is just too big- and ugly, and floppy, and weird , and non bird supporting.....and well, its just plain wrong really. Exactly what was this for? and how did this one get past idea quality control.

That concludes this weeks session of "What was she thinking?" I do hope you'll join us again for another episode of the misguided craftings of a 30 something year old librarian in rural Victoria.

Next time: Will she act on her obsession with remaking and embroidering an umbrella? We can only hope not viewers.

  2. Hey Jodie, will swap blocks for more selvedges.
Love the birdies in the cage and glad to see you are human and have some of what you consider failures too!!!

  3. I don't know why, but there's something quite reassuring about seeing the mistakes of a fantastic artist. It also makes you look real, which is a good thing! (Some of these craft blog women look like superheroes, you know? Raising 3 kids, happily married, cooking up delicious and nutritious meals for their family, SPOTLESS and beautiful house, PTA meetings, crafting and running a business on the side, phew!) It's good to see a real person around here.

I didn't know you were a Victorian! Good to see another Vic crafter. :)

  4. That is NOT a hedgehog. Is it?

  5. You know those sock monkeys that I have been making? Well before I got it 'right' my rubbish bin was filled with slaughtered socks in various stages of disembowelment. Poor sock monkeys, poor socks ... poor Kellie's wallet!

  6. Oh my I agree with twocheeseplease, it is reassuring seeing some disasters from someone who does beautiful work. It must have been quite therapeutic exposing your flops. I must clean out my disaster drawer one day.

  7. Oh my god your bird bears a spooky resemblance to the bird I attempted to make out of wool felt.

    That is freaky.

  8. My first thought is that the "dog" is a prairie dog and the "bird" is a dolphin. Curious to see what happens with the hedgehog. I love his face :o)

  9. hehe..thanks for sharing your misadventures. It goes to show that creating is a trail and error process. I have a very spooky llama made from a felted jumper... buried in the children's toybox - I can only feel contempt for it when I see it.

    The gocco-birdcages are amazing.

  10. Jodie,
good to see the other side of an amazing crafter. Gives me hope when things aren't go my way

  11. Hi Jodie. ummm... I am quite taken with the 'bird' could it be a loch ness monsterish softie?

  12. the dog and bird could have some catnip added to their innards and stitched up and the cat would be thrilled.

  13. Thank you for doing this from the bottom of my heart! I love all those crafting blogging women but seeing all of those perfect finished and original master pieces out there is quit intimidating for a dabbling amateur. It is so good to know that even the real talents among us mess up sometimes. It gives me courage. And wenn I saw the bird picture I thought 'cool an orka'.
    Greetings, M

  14. I think exhibits D and E can be saved. D looks like a cute dolphin, maybe another sea creature wouldn't make him so lonely. Exhibit E need more horizontal bars to be closer to a cage. Or you can paint it in a pale colour and use it as a fruit stand.

  15. Yay! I think this should be an idea we could all post about - confessions and cock-ups. It's great to see the WIP that doesn't work. I think doggie could be redeemed with floppy ears and the birdy is saveable too. Don't consign them to the bin :o(

  16. So funny Jodie - we all have those little disasters that don't quite work! Good luck with "The Cage" (sounds like a horror movie)!!!

By the way - do you know who that little girl fabric is by? I had one fat quarter that I loved using for wallets but it is sadly all used up and I don't know how to search for it!

  17. I think it would be a very dishinest crafter who could say that all projects were a success. ....And don't those not-quite-right softies make fabulous black/white-board dusters for visiting children?

  18. Jodie, that would make a great meme...a once a month posting of crafting disasters! Imagine how hilarious it could be....I like the little furry hedgehog thingy, he definitely has potential!

  19. Great post ....thanks for letting us know we are all alike. Draws full of disasters just waiting to escape.

  20. Thank you so much for this - i feel so much better about the weird shaped objects I've abandoned in disgust!!!

I quite like the sausage dog thingy and feel quite sad that he's now heading binwards :(

  21. Thanks Jodie, for showing the hiccups that can happen when crafting. I certainly have my fair share of these! I truly believe in order to get something to work out craft wise, you have to be willing to go through lots of "it didn't work outs". And it's good when you can laugh about it. ;o)

Now what's this about an umbrella?

  22. Jodie, you are a legend in blogland. You are aresome!!! Love your work!

  23. I think the odd failure makes you a stronger and better person.

    You have a lovely blog.

  24. I agree with Lina, thanks for keeping it real!

  25. Great post!!! we all have a basket of those... okay, well maybe not the cage!!! An umbrella huh? that could be interesting. I like your birds in your previous post!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Umm, the hedgehog does look a bit like road kill!;) That cage definately has potential though, and I'm strangely intrigued by the umbrella idea (as in you do it first!!)

  27. Just give that poor wee dogger some eyes! You will both feel so much better about it all then I promise.

  28. Stop it...you are soooo funny! Great post! Sorry that I can not offer you a new home for the fur fabric, but my feelings are similar to yours on the stuff. Has anyone claimed it yet?

  29. very amusing post, it was nice to read that somone as creative and talented as you are can still have major cock ups and crafting titanics.

I would say get rid of the fur fabric and make your hedgehog with some gocco printed fabric quills instead. I think that would look totally fab.. have a lovely rest of the weekend, we just got soaked to the skin at Lichfield Medevial Festival. And with that I'm off to raid the fridge for some cherry cheesecake.

  30. I'm so sorry but I just couldn't stop laughing at Exhibit C and D - your descriptions were so funny, but not as funny as the pics. Honestly, You've cheered me up no end.

    Just brilliant !

  31. Like Beth, I thought Exhibit D - birdish shape looks like a dolphin. Bung a couple of darker fins and a tail on, that fancy French knot for an eye and a grin on the pointy end and voila!

Er, not too sure about the cage tho'... You could put the hedgehog in it with the doggie-ish thingy and see what happens. Do fabric softies spawn?

  32. Fantastic disasters Jodie - maybe you are human after all and not always a crafting goddess! Although when I take another look at those selvedge cushions, I am reminded that you ARE a crafting goddess. The blog is looking good, by the way (worth clicking over to the real thing instead of reading on bloglines).

  33. I am so impressed by this post Jodie - what a brave soul you are. I have so many diasters, and half-assed projects that I don't dare share them or people will know just what a phoney crafter I am!! I would love to have a go at doing something with the doggie/rat thing. Maybe a new type of swap? send a mistake to someone and see what they make it into? just another form of recycling really!! The bird cage made me giggle - I'm glad you told me what it was first. ;0

  34. Your projects are always beautiful ... so reading this post is a bit like watching the out-takes at the end of a movie. Your commentary is hilarious!

  35. Thank you Jodie for setting us all the track to reality!
I sometimes [be honest, - often] have this need for everything to turn out well; the first time! Even if it's a brand new venture! You know, when one takes a class, somehow the tutor makes it all look so easy and when one gets it home, one is soooooooo proud. And then, a little bit down the track: "What was I thinking?"

So much of my knitting gets ripped out; especially new or untried things. Nobody knows the trouble I've seen...[time for a song, eh, what?!]

  36. Hey, I think I could use the pink blocks with the red snowball corners!!! Are they still available?

  37. You have made me smile (actually laugh very very hard!!).. Its the school holidays, 3 kids, got my period what else could go wrong..and I am laughing myself off the chair... I now realise thats why I havent been blogging, Ive been busy sewing not so proud of things and poking them in the vinnie bag. Your doggy/rat thingy got me big time..It would take me a week to photograph all my ufo's. Most of them get thrown out. I hat admitting I stuffed up or that my vision wasnt really meant to be reality.. thanks for the giggle.
