There are some nice ladies on you tube who like to share their crochet skill. I watched, tried, re-watched tried again and I still suck too, but they were very nice ladies.
I can't help it. I'm GRINNING. It's just that it looks like you started out quite loose and optimistic-like. Then came over all tight-lipped and miffed with every row. And don't I know how that goes...
Bree is right. The best thing to practice on is grannies. You cannot go wrong. A million and one crochet blogs out there with tutes and all sorts. One of my favourites is Bunny Mummy. Jacquie makes lovely things and takes beautiful photographs of her part of the world. :)
About 3 years ago I taught myself to crochet - I'm usually a knitter if I do anything with yarn at all - and for the whole summer I was obsessed with it. I made everything from fingerless gloves through boleros to jackets. Then, I stopped for whatever reason and now just cannot get the hang of it again. I look at some of the things I made and wonder how I did it. I think I was in the hold of some sort of crochet spell which has now gone forever.
I crocheted many baby blankets last century and a couple of years ago I took part in a class at the Craft Fair (to keep my daughter company because I thought I actually could crochet!) and was told I wasn't crocheting properly. Haven't touched a crochet hook since. My daughter now knits and crochets beautifully and I only knit dishcloths. End of story!
I can't seem to get past crocheting simple dishcloths. I'll have like 1,000 by Summer's end! :o) Oh and they are wonky too but the dishes don't seem to care. I want to make granny squares but I need supervision. I'm mostly self-taught and that isn't saying much!!!
And I wanted to say that your nurse/horse back riders are awesome. If they fall and get scuffed up they can "heal thyself."
Jodie, I used Craftyminx Crochet school to help me but I still ended up with a skirt for Miss3 doll rather than a square on my second attempt and we DO NOT discuss the first attempt - EVER!!!! I think I started with 12 chain and ended up with 68 chain - hence the skirt!! Still I am getting better so keep trying and also check our Attic24, there are lots of helpful hints there too. Good Luck and remember that you design patterns that make most of us drool!
You are SO funny! If only I'd known in Portland (and there'd been time). We could have had a crochet-a-thon. I'd whip you into shape. You can DO it-- if you can sew those intricate stuffies, crocheting is a piece of cake!
Don't give up yet!! Mine looked horrible when I first started. It looks like you might be forgeting your turning chain. That will make it smaller every row. That's what happened to me. I didn't give up and am now designing some patterns of my own. Plus, I tried to learn to knit a couple of years ago and got frustrated and gave up. Well this week I poked that bruise again and guess what...it's not sore anymore. I am almost finished with a dishcloth. I may not get much further than making dishcloths but now I can honestly say I can knit.
Check out slugs on the refrigerator blog...she is doing a totally free crochet camp this month with explanations, patterns; the works. She is totally awesome at explaining things....I've been crocheting for 30 years and I'm learning stuff.
I think you and I could do an intensive crochet course. Let me tell you your little piece there is much better than anything i could come up with. It is one bruise I don't poke any more.
you're not doing anything wrong, it's just your tension, it's getting tighter and tighter. Just keep going, keep on crocheting those rows back and forth and eventually you will find your natural tension, then it won't be wonky.

ReplyDeleteI've gotten as far as dish rags. It doesn't matter how uneven they are.
ReplyDeleteTry a granny square. It's far easier than straight line crochet

ReplyDeleteYes, I know that feeling! I poke my knitting bruise every so often. And I still suck!
ReplyDeleteWell I never, the Lesser Spotted Tania, I thought that species was extinct.
ReplyDeleteYes, Jod, I do poke bruises, but I don't crochet, I shan't crochet, I won't crochet, so I will never know your pain.
Join Rav and cry at "Fatty Lumpkin" and his pentangle(or whatever the not square granny square is called) animal friends.
Ha! Nobody is perfect :))

ReplyDeleteIf only you lived in my town, i could help unbruise you i think.

I always poke bruises and it drives my husband mad but you've got to check if it still hurts right?
ReplyDeleteIt is doable just like those heads on sticks you collect.
ReplyDeleteKeep poking.
You are nothing but resilient, young lady! Keep trying, keep poking, something is bound to happen!
