Sliding in to Christmas

Things went a little pear shaped earlier this week and I crashed into bed with a two day migraine.
What a disaster !

Yesterday, feeling better I wrote my ten mile long list of things I HAD to do to catch up, cooking , cleaning, shopping, sewing............

and then I did none of them.
I went to the supermarket and I bought stuff.
I had coffee with Flowergarden
I visited Ballarat Patchwork (twice).
I played with dollies.

Last night we had a little get-together with neighbours and guess what??

No one noticed that I hadn't hand-cured my own cheese by the light of a blue moon or that the short breads were not hand sugared by seven vestal virgins.....

Seriously no-one cared !

The Christmas police have not called to say that I cannot share my gifted Christmas cake with my in-laws - that I must make one myself. I have not been issued a pre-Christmas warning to pick up my game.

There has been no town crier in the streets calling "hear ye, hear ye, Jodie of Ballarat has dropped the ball. Jodie hereby and henceforth fails Christmas"

But just before I sink into the pit of irredeemable slackness, where the bad parents, sloppy housekeepers and wanton lushes live, I just want to say thanks. Thanks for every visit and comment and lurk. Thanks for the friendship, selvedges, support and hot-tea-snorting-out-the-nose-laughter.

May your Christmas , no matter what shape or size, be just right for you.

  2. Oh, Jodie, I am totally there with you! Who really cares about all that stuff, really? Your little dollies are gorgeous and how could resist playing with them. I know I would much rather be playing than making salads, slices, cakes.... blah, blah! Did you get Ellie done in time or were you up till 3am finishing her? Anyway, Happy christmas to you and yours!

  3. Thanks for a healthy dose of perspective (plus Woolworths/Safeway makes a much better caramel slice than I do - hands down).
Happy Christmas to you & yours.

  6. Hi Jodie, in the attempt to be the perfect domestic Goddess - Martha has a lot of answer for- don't we just beat ourselves up for nothing. No-one cares about the food, it's you they want to see, not how perfect your royal icing on the cake is!! I am slowly learning the lesson!! Thanks for your inspiration! Enjoy your christmas and hol's.- take a load off :)

  9. That is THE most fun Christmas post. Sometimes we just need to ignore our lists and play with dolls...the are not judgemental! May the spirit of Christmas be with you! That sounds a little Star Trek-ish!

  11. Jodie. What a wonderful post. I stumbled across your blog recently and just love it. As a mum to a 10 month old (Felix), I've struggled to do what I would have liked to have done for Christmas this year - make Felix a special decoration for the tree, make him a santa sack etc. But instead of focussing on what I've not done, I'm starting to celebrate what I have achieved (made a pair of Christmas shorts and an applique t-shirt, and if all goes well this afternoon, bake some cookies for Santa). It's time now to stop and watch my little guy enjoy trashing the Christmas tree, and be completely overwhelmed tomorrow with presents and visitors. So bring on the ham I don't have to cook, the icecream for dessert, the bought dips and chips, and the salads that everyone else is bringing! Merry Christmas! Lyn

  14. Thank you for a beautifully grounded view of Christmas preparations. There's been a mire of to-do lists here. I am immediately dispensing with all extraneous sewing/baking/decorating/pfaffing about ... and going to try and enjoy Christmas eve instead (... though I might actually pop out and buy the food for lunch tomorrow)

    Have a wonderful Christmas!

  16. I love baking and making at Christmas but I'm with you - it should be a fun experience not a stressful one.
I think too many people overlook the fact that Christmas is about getting together and being happy not about how many presents you get or how much work you put into it. I'm over the stress, if all else fails, stick a sausage on the barbie - and share it with family and friends.
    Have a merry one!

  22. You dont have to make everything yourself just because you can! We cheated and bought a pudding at a Farmers Market, there was no way I was slaving away for hours to make a pudding for a grand total of 3 people. Its the thought that counts, right?

    Merry Christmas!

  23. ha ha.. hope you aren't on the 'be on the lookout' with the quilt police!!!
seriously.. I dont take it all serious at all.. I just finished work early (love my boss) and bought some alcomohol and the kids clothes.. last minute? adds to the excitement..
and store bought is OK.. it usually requires me not to have to assemble it or stuff it up and make it again three times :O))

Merry Chrissy to you, and hope santa is good to you.. I already know I been BAD, so not expecting more than a wheelbarrow full of coal (my stocking is very small)

word verifaction today is MATES freaky if you ask me petal!

  27. I for one happen to be enjoying the pit of irredeemable slackness!! My kids are watching a movie WAY past their bed time in their messy room, my house is a disater and I am sitting with some wine reading blogs. So let's see....bad parent? Check! sloppy housekeeper? Check! wanton lush? Check! Perfect! LOL

Now I must go finish the hand sewing in the last of my Christmas gifts! :)

  32. Oh I totally agree! You shouldn't clean or bake or whatever but focuss on the things people actually do pay attention to like if you can be yourself and are happy...wishing you a cosy christmas and a very selfedgy 2009!! I enjoyed reading your blog this year and still enjoying my dotted red and white teapot softy you sent me. Absolutely made my year a lot better!! thanks jodie! 36. I had to abandon so many plans and christmas activities and creations this year - but I've realised why.......... it's because I always set my expectations way too high! Christmas is meant to be fun for everyone - not fun for everyone else and mega stressful for the parents!

    Have a really lovely time!

  42. aww sorry about the migraine.. I had one a few weeks ago and it left me in a mood for about a week... wishing you all the best this holiday season.. store boughts cakes and all...

  43. Merry Christmas to you and yours!!
Just consider you are supporting the economy with purchased items and lord knows, it needs help right now.

Keep up the good work with all your crafty goodness.

I love your cutely felt snails! They are adorable!

  44. Glad the migraine is gone. I am shocked, shocked that no vestal virgins were involved in sugaring the shortbread... and so are those snails by the look of it!

Mainly 'cos I didn't know vestal or indeed any other virgins were supposed to do that sort of thing. I have such an innocent life... occasionally.

Have a great holiday and thank you for leaving with the question of what the Christmas Police uniform looks like...

Hope next year is even better than this one.

  45. Thanks for the perspective. Imagine a world where we didn't try to do everything by ourself! Relax and enjoy the season as it was meant to be - in the company of family and friends and the occasional stranger! Merry Christmas and I'll be back in the new year to see what you are creating next.

  46. Jodie, you are the queen of perspective, and just what I needed yesterday during the last minute craziness of Christmas eve, when I feel like I've been failing on Christmas this year since mid-November! You're a goddess, and you're right, even though I didn't get everything done "perfectly" as I'd wished to, the town criers didn't show up at my house either, and Christmas day was just fine. It's all in the point of view, it seems.

Merry Christmas to you and yours, Jodie! I'm so glad we've "met" this year!

  47. Sometimes it takes a kick in the pants to put things in perspective. Sorry it took a painful migraine, but glad you came out the other side in true form. Thank you for sharing all you fun and creativity. Have a Merry Christmas with your loved ones.

  48. Playing with dollies and snails is way more fun than cooking. You go, girl!

  50. Thanks for the perspective! And yea! for lurkers! Oh rats! Guess I'm not a lurker anymore! I so appreciate all the blogs I check in on from time to time and have never understood the sometimes bad feelings towards lurkers....

  51. Oh Jodie I wish I had read your post before I beat myself up with the wet noodle for not living up to whatever expectations I think I need to live up to!!! I am copying this post off and keeping as a reminder for next year!! So sorry about your migraine and belated Merry Christmas to you!

  56. Oh I so wish I had read this before christmas, might have avoided a family feud over my apparent need to have everything perfect!! Next year I promise to laugh more, realx a bit, and enjoy my life!. I will read here daily to remind me of these resolutions. Thanks for the hot-tea-snorting laughs, that was definitely me!

    you rock!

i love your little snails! :)

and i love christmas - all hand-made and perfect, or partially hand-made and perfect, or - well - as long as it's filled with love, a tree, a goodie or two and a gift or two - it's perfect!

    glad you enjoyed yours!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Oh now I can relax...I have been waiting for the Christmas police to come a-knocking at my door for several days now.

But if you got away with not hand-curing your own cheese, I think I should be safe :)

    Great blog!

  59. Hi Jodie! I'm so glad to hear that you didn't flunk Christmas! Your post made me laugh. I have found that the world can handle it when I cut way back on my "list" too. I love your blog.
Very best wishes for a wonderful new year!!

  60. One more thing: I get migraines too, but I take Imitrex as soon as it starts, and within 2 hours, the headache is almost always gone. Look into it! Suffering for two days is too awful. Take care. Karen
