Tweaking hell.

Hmmmmm....

So the newest selvedge project is not exactly what I had hoped for. The chorus of angels have been sent home and the band have packed up and left.

It is not a total disaster, obviously it has a certain parasol-ness about it. I mean, it really couldn't be mistaken for anything else and it opens and shuts and does everything a parasol should.

and I do love how it looks from underneath with the sun shining through the selvedges

But it is essentially wonky...... far wonkier than these photos would have you think

I have tweaked and unpicked and re-tweaked for days, but (with a resigned sigh) wonky it shall remain.

I am all tweaked out.

  1. I think it looks fab, wonky or not!

  2. Wow, wish my wonky wonders looked as fab as this. No doubt there are some of us that would feel no shame raiding your wheelie bin next collection night if we got wind that was in the offing.

  4. it looks lovely. not wonky at all. we are always our own worst critiques.

  5. I Love the way it looks! What a project! Hard to believe it is wonky at all and... What a cool talent you have!

  6. Parasols are wonky-ish. It's great Jodie!

  7. Maybe your words "far wonkier than these photos would have you think" mean that now that you get a new perspective in the photos it is better than you first thought? I love it.

  8. Wonk should be celebrated. I love the way it looks with the sun shining through too.

  9. It still is cute!

  10. Jodie,
you are being far too harsh on yourself, this wonky is fabulous.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I don't care, I think it looks fab anyway!

I can't believe that you did it!!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Never mind, on you wonky looks great! ;-)

  13. I think it looks great.. and perfection is flawed anyway... I much prefer imperfect things.. or so I tell myself because everything I make is always wonky in some way or other.

if only my wonky was on a scale with your wonky, as your wonky is better than mine!

though perhaps its jsut my logic that is wonky.

  14. The crazy selvedge woman once did sew
    A parasol, wouldn't you know!?
    To her, wonky it seemed
But, ah, how all of us dreamed,
That our wonkiness was as good as young Jo's.

I had a little guess that it might have been an umbrella/parasol concoction. It was the little ruffle at the top photo from your previous post that gave it away to me. Brilliant. Now I want to see the parasol in a photo shoot with The Dress.

LMAO my word verification is blerp.

  15. Oh my goodness...that is absolutely amazing! I'm still spinning out...

  16. I too, think this amazing crafting feat needs a photo shoot with the dress!!.. awesome..Maybe you should decoupage your front door in selvedge, or perhaps the mailbox!that would be cool, perhaps drag the resin out and make a mailbox, yep, that would be a one of a kind thing.. The post office would talk about it for years!!!!..

  18. oh love it...
i can understand how by trying to get it to sit right across the frame it stretches etc... it reminds me of covering lamp shades...when i did millinary you could buy a fabric stifner that you painted on and it did not stain the fabric, felt etc...but unfortunetly was quiet toxic and smelt horrid but it did work well...
    anyhoo it's divine...

  19. Jodie, it is glorious!! I would never have imagined making a parasol - I like the way your brain works. My first thought every time I see your work is; how? In this case, how do you get the frame - can you just buy a parasol frame? How hard is it to attach the fabric? And I wish my brain worked like yours!! I've actually been looking for a parasol, but I didn't know you could MAKE one - especially from selvedges! Do please post a photo with the dress. The calendar people will wish they had waited for this.

  20. Don't be so hard on yourself- it looks incredible and fabulous! Talk about an imagination...I would never have ever thought of doing something like that- well done! It's absolutely brilliant! I love it!

  21. Amazing!! Wonderful!! Weird!! Quirky!! Tremendous!! and thats all about you..lol, the umbrella is Terrific...love the ruffly bit on top....so touchable!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Jodie, you're just so creative! Who'd even think of turning selvedges into a parasol, where do you dream up these ideas. I wish I could get into you're brain!!
P.S. I think the Selvedge title is sticking, might be your spot after all:-)

  23. I guessed right! It's gorgeous and I'm sure parasols are supposed to be soft and bendy not like machine made umbrellas. Can't wait for the photo of the dress and the parasol dancing around the garden. What talent and what patience you have!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Jodie, you're such a crack up. Imagine calling that gorgeous piece of work, wonky. How I wish I could be even the teensiest bit wonky like you!

Call the chorus of angels back, I say!

    ReplyDelete
  25. It's gorgeous and your imagination is unbelieveable. Love your sense of humor.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Wow...what a fantastic parasol! As for the wonkyiness...I wonder if the position of the bias is important.. as selvages are as straight as grain as you could get....
Just been looking at an umbrella I have here (don't worry I didn't open it fully in the house :o) and the grain is parallel with the edge of the edge of the umbrella...
Would love to know how you when about this and where you got an umbrella frame from..it is so unique!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Absolutely totally amazing!! What more can it say!

    ReplyDelete
  28. That's amazing! I think you should be very proud of yourself for making this. Is it your first parasol? It looks great :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Firstly, madam, you made a PARASOL. Now if that's not an achievement in itself I will eat my legs, secondly you made it out of SELVEDGE. You are a frikkin' genius.

    I shall say no more.

    ReplyDelete
  30. This is so amazing! I want to quit my studies, and just sit (quietly, I promise) in your sewing room watching you work. Ok that sounds a little freakish, I know.....but seriously...HOW??? How did you get the idea?? How did you make it??? How how how?! I bough to you, oh queen of craftiness!

    ReplyDelete
  31. But then sunlight and even rain are usually fairly wonky, so it all works. so long as it does as it should that is what matters. By the way 'wonky'... you're getting technical now, aren't you?!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Wonky or not, it has obviously been alot of work and is still really original and shows alot of skill!

    x hel x

    ReplyDelete
  33. I say embrace the Wonk! because it is a thing of beauty!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I guess I'm missing the wonk-i-tude, but it is brilliant and fabulous regardless of any wonkiness. Wonk=Unique I want to see a picture of parasol + dress!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I can understand how you could call something so awesome looking wonky, but only since I'm a crazy perfectionist, too.

I was going to suggest trying out different kinds of interfacing if you haven't already, but the comment about the bias seems like a lot better of a technical solution.

    ReplyDelete
  36. i would like to get into your head...how do you come up with ideas like this? simply amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  37. You continue to amaze me... it's fabulous, wonky or not!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Well it is cute. Wonky or not! I love it and it is such a good idea. I don't know how you come up with these ideas.

I wore my scarf last night to a big quilting event where I was a presenter. I had SO many comments on my selvedge scarf. It was a huge hit. I had to tell everyone about your projects.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Wonky or not wonky, it looks wonderful. Wonky has a certain charm and appeal to it and if you didn't tell people it was wonky they wouldn't bat an eyelid! Go selvedge Queen!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Wow! That's amazing. I love it.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm with everyone else... it looks awesome! And yes, everyone knows what it is! At least we don't have to carefully ask "what is it??" !!!! It's always good to walk away when frustrated! What's the next selvedge project going to be?!

  67. sew create it-jane got it right.
You need to cut 8 individual sections with the straight grain horizontal.
Years ago, my kids made painted umbrellas in art class at school.
As for buying umbrella frames, haven't they heard of pulling apart one they already have, or buying an old one from the op shop?
Nice to see you went ahead and posted even thought you weren't totally happy with result.
A perfect accessory for the outfit,
    are selvedge shoes next?
    Cheers Jan
