On Sunday I attended and intermediate Screen printing workshop at Red Brick Gallery and had a ball! I have always loved the idea of screen-printing and of course some elements are similar to Mr Gocco (and you know I love Mr Gocco). This is not my stencil with very neat circles cut out- I have to admit I am more at home with a pair of scissors than I am with a cutting blade thingo- my curves were a little jagged in places.
This screen had had the design applied and the filler, then the design-y bit washed away ready to print. (also not mine)
Super cute two-toned rabbit printed on fabric
The delightful Laura (our teacher) with the screen all ready to go, pinning the fabric underneath. If you are local-ish (She is based in Melbourne) and you get a chance I recommend taking one of Laura's classes, its laid back and fun and relaxed but informative and Laura tells you everything you need to know. the FUN bit !!!! I could have easily become a screen-hog during this bit, it really is so much fun I just wanted to print and print and print.
The T-shirt. This design is Maree's, whom I met on the day. It worked out beautifully and she printed me one of her designs on fabric to bring home. Maree is the textiles teacher I wish I had when I was a kid.
This is a design that I took from the Ed Roth book Stencil 101. The plan is to use the screen print as a background to some embroidery.

I am mildly obsessing with a screen printing / embroidery combo something thingo, and have been for about a month...but if I try and put one more thing in this brain at the moment I am sure to have a meltdown. Why is it that the busier I am (and lo friends I am BUSY) , the more ideas I want to try out? It's like some sort of weird Creative hyper-drive... Remember Buck Rogers ? when he went through that coloured tunnel thing in his little rocket ? that's me guys - I am the craft equivalent of Buck Rogers.
(How embarrassment)
"beedee beedee beedee bip, sorry Buck."
ReplyDeleteI did screen printing as part of the printmaking unit during my fine arts course. I love it's potential but lining up for the second and subsequent runs never worked out for me!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you enjoyed it though!
I'd love to do screen printing - and I'd love to have another go at Gocco. Looking forward to seeing what your printing/stitching combo looks like. Locket xx
ReplyDeleteYou go girl! Being super woman/mum/stitcher you can achieve all manner of things before lunchtime! Yep better wind that craft clock up, its going to come in handy this week! Happy stitching and printing, Sue SA.
ReplyDeletefantastic! give a second life to an old T-shirts! :)
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see what you embroider on that. Bet it's something awesome! Glad you had a great time and yes, I think it could be quite addictive hey!
ReplyDeleteAnother thing I'd love to do. What could be cooler than making fabric then making quilts with it? Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy you loved the course - it looks wonderful (judging by the excellent designs). Screen printing really is addictive - I never tire of lifting the screen to see the print. You can print with me any time!
ReplyDeleteOne of my loves too (not that I've tried it yet).....one day
ReplyDeleteOoooo! that is definitely on my growing list of want-to-dos! fun!
ReplyDeleteTrash got there first - drat that's what I was going to say :D
ReplyDeleteMessy. I'm not good with messy stuff. But the embroidery idea is very attractive.
Buck Rogers was fun, utter kitsch!, but fun. However I'm grateful we don't have to wear those white skintight jumpsuits. Not a good look on me.
That brought back fond memories of a very long time past....enjoy the fun of it all.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a technique I'd love to learn...one day!
ReplyDeleteScreenprinting is definitely on my bucket list!Impressive results - glad you had fun.
ReplyDeleteAs long as you don't start wearing your underwear on the outside you'll be alright!! Oh wait, that was Clark not Buck, sorry got my hero's jumbled..love a good hero I do... :o)

Buck Rogers is my hero. Just for being able to gad about in those outfits with minimal injury. Hey Jod, one of THOSE costumes would be just the ticket...
ReplyDeleteThat looks like such a fun course. My mum used to screen print but I have not dabbled in it yet.....
ReplyDeleteGo you! I love the idea of screen printing. My 17 year ols son and I are always coming up with ideas for t-shirts. I also love what wickedness you weave with your embroidery needle...can't wait to see the results.
ReplyDeleteTonnes of fun, it's just brilliant isn't it, this screen printing game. I so wish some of the craft teachers i've met now were around at school, OMG, how awful were those nasty spinsterly types, do they realise they scar us for life?? Love Posie
ReplyDeleteOoh, Nell and I really want to have a crack at screen printing. I can't wait to see what you do with your spraycan. It'll be the craftiest tagging in town.
ReplyDeleteWell Buck, I for one can't wait to see what wording gets embroidered on that can!
ReplyDelete(is it a can of whoop ass??, I heard an American I met on a course once in the US use that phrase in reference to someone she didn't like....)
You know you probably just alienated every person reading your blog under a certain age..!! I have to admit I was way more into Battlestar Galactica than Buck Rogers, he was too wholesome for me!!!!
ReplyDeleteYour predicament reminded me of a great Married with Children episode, which is not quite as old as the inimitable Buck Rogers of course. (On a side note, I always wondered why his partner had the same name as Wilma Flintstone. Were pre-historic cartoon character names fashionable in the 25th century? Anyway, back to the point...) In MwC Kelly has to learn facts for a test or something and each new thing she learns pushes one old one out of her brain. Better get those ideas out before they fall out.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you had such a fun time! Would love to go to abscreen printing class, will have to look it up. Can't wait to see what you embroider on the spray can.
ReplyDeleteI've been in love with screen printing since the 7th grade. Especially when the teacher let us clean the screens, with paint thinner! Why it was OK for kids to use it I don't know.. But then I took a print making class in high school. So much fun!! I was just talking to my Mom about that class, telling her that I wish I could just show up at the school and take some art classes :) I love the spray can!
ReplyDeleteHi Jody, I did the class the day before with Laura (& Michelle). It was the best! I am also one of those people who like to give themselves more and more jobs even though there's too much already. I bought a screen printing kit straight away and have my dad making me more screens to do photo emulsion on. So excited!

Go Buck!! Love the spray bottle and looking forward to seeing what's going to come out of it (something tells me it's not a non-stick spray for preparing banana loaf pans).
ReplyDeleteIt's the same when you're crook.... lying there..... thinking of all the things you could be doing.... At least you've now mastered screen printing, that's definitely another string to your bow! ♥
ReplyDeleteWhoa, Buck Rogers - I remember seeing the movie then being a bit obsessed with the tv show. All the best shows were on 7:30 Friday nights - Buck,Battlestar Gallactica, CHIPS,Night Rider....
ReplyDeleteI bought a silk screen years ago but have yet to get around to doing a course (I was going to go to my "local" at Olive Grove studios, Sydney Rd Brunswick. Like a need another craft to add to the growing list....
Sorta thought you'd have a ball - love your print - that would have taken a lot of care and effort to cut out. All power to you!
ReplyDeleteman you're busy.. i love that printing. it looks thrilling **** i'd be stencilling everything that would stay still i think..

ReplyDeleteI have been investigating screen printing of late. Shame we live so far apart we could have a play date.
ReplyDeleteDo your family have to staple you to the chair to get you to sit still? I'm tired just reading what you're up to. But don't stop.
ReplyDeleteFantastic. It's such a small world. Laura used to work for me while she was studying printmaking in Brisbane. I cried when she moved back to Melbourne.
ReplyDeleteOoh, I soooo want to do screen printing! Your workshop looks fab.
