Slugs and snails

Slugs

and snails

and puppy-dog tails.

A recent influx of boy babies (like 2) gave me an excuse to work on the buckets a bit more. Even though I love the buckets over in the side bar - I have always wanted to have a go at some that are more ...well...buckety, if you know what I mean.

So after a few wonky starts. I ended up with these.

This shape is definitely my new favourite for containers. The bottom has a fabric covered templastic circle sewn to it so they stand quite well and the wool blend fabric has enough texture to forgive the wonky hand sewing of the base.

The only thing I am not sold on , is the handles (artfully fashioned from some wire coat hangers).

Oh and I realise the slug kinda looks like an alien.

I still want them to be wire, so I don't want to cover them, I just want nicer wire-maybe black??? Any suggestions ?

In non buckety news

  • I have a sore foot and it is all strapped up so I have learnt to accelerate my sewing machine with my other foot.

  • Miss Jemma just scored the LEAD role in the school production (but you know, like it's no big deal mum , you don't have to go telling the whole world.) It is The Wiz, a jazzed up version of The Wizard of Oz. (I so want to make her a Dorothy frock...)

  • I have joined Lucy Lockets Mini quilt swap and will be swapping with the very talented Monda loves.

and I thought knitting with wool was hard................can you imagine knitting with televisions?

  1. Fabulous buckets! I quite like the wire handles - not sure what else you could do except paint them? But the paint will invariably flake off at some point, won't it?

And the alien slug isn't alien at all - he's gorgeous.

Congratulations to Miss Jemma - what's the production? Sorry to hear about your foot - hope it gets better very soon.

  4. Those buckets are super cool. I also like the wire hanger. Maybe you could put a long wooden bead in the middle for a more traditional handle look. Looking forward to seeing you mini quilt. Cheers! Tracey

Congratulations to Miss Ric-Rac - I think it is great news!

Been busy working on your mini-quilt for our mini-swap - I hope you are going to like it - I worried through the night that it was no good but it was better than I remembered when I looked at it this morning! Don't panic because I have been doing yours - I do have 19 to make after all!!!

  8. Hey they're really cool and I love your little felty critters! As far as the wire hangers go, you could maybe check out your local hardware to see if they have some prettier wire.
Love the joke at the end.....hilarious!

  10. The buckets are adorable! And the snail is perfect, not an alien in sight!!

You must be so proud of your daugther, a lead-role!! I don't care what she says, that is a very big deal!

  11. First of all, I got a little boy's opinion since you are making them for a boy. My 3 year old thought the snail looked 'just like a snail', which is what I thought! Not an alien. I love the buckets.

  12. Jodie, you are amazing! Friday you talk about it, Sunday it's done!!! They are terrific. Glad news is out on Jem, and the TV knitting is a hoot. I have some blue'ish wire if that helps any...

  13. Wonderful little buckets, specially the colorful little critters against the warm wool background (crawling around in clean dirt:)
Have a new baby boy due in the family this July. Better get started now, I'm not a magician like you, Jodie.
Good for Jemma, sounds alot like her Mum plenty of spunk and sparkle.
    Hope the foot heals soon!

  15. I love the buckets just as they are - I think the wire handles look great!

Congrats to Miss Jemma on securing the star role - I dare you to make her a Dorothy dress :)

Glad to hear your poorly foot hasn't stopped the sewing!

Why would anyone want to knit a television?

  16. ACK! So cute! I had wanted to make my son a bucket for his Easter basket but never got the chance.

The yarn label is amazing. I love this kind of mid-century advertising. Everything happens in front of the TV!

  17. You can find wires in a bazillion colors at crafts stores like Michael's (don't forget the 40% off coupon in almost every Sunday paper!). I think blue would be awesome with these. They're just too cute!

  18. no no no - those wire handles are marvellous. I love them!

    Well done Jemma!!! :)

  19. The buckets are adorable; you've got me thinking that perhaps my nephew needs one. =*) I like your wire hangers -- one thought that came to me if you want something different is maybe a vinyl or rubber coated wire would be good. Like a telephone wire or something like that. Also, I think the hardware store has this vinyl stuff that you put over wires and then use a heat gun to shrink onto it -- I think its something used for protecting electric wires -- so you could keep the hangers but maybe shrink some colorful stuff onto them. Anyway, they're great!

  20. At the risk of repeating everyone, fabulous buckets there Missus.

Also very excited to hear about Miss Jemma's stage debut. Have been waiting ever so patiently to hear how things went on Paris. It was nearly Spring, did she fall in love? Climb the Eiffel Tower? Dance down the Champs Elysee under the the chery blossom? There must be some stories, is she sharing? :-)

  22. Ahhhh Jodie, you are so creative! I used you bag pattern to make my first ever home made bag. It was perfect. I did have to do a little computing to change the dimensions over to our inferior American system and I had to google A-4 paper, but otherwise a perfect pattern and tutorial. I showed it on my blog, http://mytwocoldfeet.blogspot.com/, and will put another pic up when I have found buttons for it. Thank you so much for sharing that. I will be making many more!
I tried to hug my mailman the other day when he brought me some fabric, but he got kind of freaked so I just thanked him a million times. Some times I just feel a hug is in order lol. Love Stacy

  25. Looooooove the buckets. Try some good old plastic tubing you can get from Spotlight and cover the wire with it. You know the stuff they put on the wire hanging bit on those crochet coathangers. Just loving every little thing you do lately. Very inspiring. Need to chat about my sons upcoming third birthday too. I can feel someone special coming to visit. Chat soon. Shaz

  29. Oh and don't they just look gorgeous. I'm sure those new baby boys will love them (or at least their Mum's will).

  30. What fab buckets - the wire handles are perfect. Hope your foot makes a quick recovery - although it sounds as if you have adapted quite well!

  31. Hey Jodie, once again too cute! You could wrap some embroidery floss tightly around the wire for a different look, but I do like the wire - very buckety.
Please pass on my congratulations to Miss Jemma. She is a talented girl just like her mother.

  32. lovin the little guys on the buckets. Job hasn't started yet, not for another 2 weeks because of the big move. I'll let you know how it goes. How can getting paid to sew and teach others to sew be half bad?!

  33. They are so great! My fav is the dog, too cute. I think the handles are OK left as is, gives the bucket look with wire.

  34. Oh, wow! Those buckets are fantastic. And what's better than an alien slug? I'm sure most kids would consider it being from outer space to be a benefit! :)

  35. All too cute Jodie, those slugs, those snails, those puppdog tails and those buckets! Your blanket stitching is lovely, by the way. Congrats to Miss Jemma - not surprising, talented mother has talented daughter!
By the way, how was France?

  37. Love those buckets!!! I had a sore ankle the other day but I think it was from sewing short seams and constantly taking my heel up to lift the needle and then release my foot to go iron!!! I am not sure I would be a good left footed driver!!!
    TV knitting! how funny!

  41. Sorry to hear about your sore foot. Hope it gets better quick, quick. ;o)

Love these buckets, you clever girl! These are adorable.

  42. I suppose it would not make much commercial sense for you to post a pattern and tutorial on the buckets. They are extremely appealing and I am inspired to struggle through trying to make one myself. I have just the place for one. I think it is hardware made into software aspect that is so alluring. Also the snail is gorgeous.
