The secret to success

The secret to the successful dyeing of fabric
lies in ones ability to carefully read and follow all instructions

(including the one about rubber gloves)

  3. It's sort of fun to have a blue hand for a week or so, no?
When I used to henna my hair, I once forgot to wear gloves and ended up with red hands for about a week! Good fun (being a teenager, and having other stupid teenagers making comments).
    Have a good day Bluey.

  5. Reminds me of the blue guy on Oprah who drank too much silver or some other sort of metal. Here's hoping you don't stain everything you touch for the next few days!

BTW. This is something I would do.

  6. instructions? what are they??

I'm with Amy, this is something I would also do!

  8. that was supposed to say smurf lifestyle, not smurk lifestyle.

i couldn't type because i was seriously laughing SO hard.

    hahahahaha.

  9. I agree with gina, very much like dead body hands! I do hot water dyes so I can't forget the gloves!!

  10. Oh, my! I will remember this. I have some dye in the basement to dye some batting and I never read instructions but I do read blogs! Thanks for the heads up.

    Have a nice weekend.....

  11. man o man, how long till the dye wears off? maybe you could wear some kind of a cuff so it looks like gloves. ya know start a new trend. tee-hee-hee.

  12. Ohhhh whoops Jodie!! You do make me giggle.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Ohhh, you match Kane, but he is green. I've just taken him to swimming lessons with green paws after a grade 1 science experiment. I hope it's not the mothers day present ...

    ReplyDelete
  14. I hope we get to see the finished product soon! Let me guess, is it blue?? ;0p

  15. Love the realism on your blog Jodie!

  16. EWWWWWW......I learned that lesson with green dye!

  17. thanks for the heads up...i mean for giving us a hand...i have made a note to self...wear gloves...keep us posted on how long it takes for it to go away...the dye that is

  18. Jodie maybe you should get together with Sara???
    http://willowandmoo.blogspot.com/2009/04/naughty-girl.html

Start your own club or something - you've already got a not-so-secret hand thing going on!

  19. That might be useful in freaking out the kids at school! Dear Jodie - where we would be without you!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I have many pairs of gloves, even some with pretty ruffles, but do I put them on when it's time to dye? Of course not! The clerk at the bank freaked over my green fingers. Comet and a scrub brush work well, or go for pure bleach.

  21. I never follow the instructions that have to do with protecting yourself. I usually have painted clothes and stained hands. It looks like you follow the same method.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Perhaps you could use a cotton bud and dip it in bleach and do a reverse tattoo thingy...Too funny..As long as the fabric worked out, thats all that really matters...
Sudden thought! *** Was it intentional so that you really 'Cannot' cook on mothers day?? ( I mean I wouldnt want dyed hands preparing my lunch)..Great plan..

  23. ROFL

Looks like something I would do!

  24. Reminds me of severe frostbite. I thought these kind of things only happened to me.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Uh oh.. you are turning into a smurf! I am feelin' your pain (shame)

  26. Hah! NOt only do you want to wear gloves to protect your hands, you want to protect the lighter colors from the darker colors you touched before you touched them, gloves being so much easier to rinse!

Of course, then there's the funny look of a hand with just one finger dyed because of a glove blowout!

    ReplyDelete
  27. shampoo gets it off....well, it works better than most other things...ask me how I know. hahahaha

    ReplyDelete
  28. ROFLOLOLOL ............ Ok, no smurf jokes .....!!!!
    Hugs,
    Joy :o)

  29. It's nice to see that you believe in getting up close and personal with your craft...

    ReplyDelete
  30. *snurk*

It could be worse.. not sure how but it could be... like rubbing your face with a handful of dye so you wander around looking like an extra from Star trek...for days... thats normally what I do with paint anyway..

    ReplyDelete
  31. Oh no, but oh so funny for us!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I hope your fabric looks lovely because your hand could audition for a part on Silent Witness.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Silly Noggin!!!! Hope you haven't terrified the children at school! Lucy xxx

  34. Ah, yet another bit of evidence to suggest the responsible, reading-the-instructions method is a better (and boring) way to go than the flying by the seat of your pants approach. Bummer you're not American and it isn't Halloween with those lovely cadaver hands!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hi Jodie, nice hands!

I choose to dye without gloves a lot. The colour will fade from your skin pretty quickly (a few days). I find that I have these purplish-black stains on my nails for weeks though. That's what you get when you dye rainbows. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  36. thats hilarous Jodie..... I do the same thing.... or I put a glove on one hand and then use a couple of fingers on the ungloved hand to push the fabric into the dye...makes sense right....lol.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I WAS QUITE CONCERNED AT FIRST...
I THOUGHT YOU MAY HAVE HURT YOURSELF... I`M GLAD THAT ALL IS WELL! LOL

  38. I just kakked my daks from laughing too much!
    Wayyy waaayyy too funny.
    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh, jeepers! If I lived nearby, I'd bring you a whole box of gloves. I'll tell you that the reduran paste from Dharma trading works wonders when I spatter my legs/arms/face (THAT is a look that is good on noone!). Also, making up a paste of baking soda and water works for minor incidents, if you scrub alot.

    ReplyDelete
  40. You'll be able to scare the shit out of the kids on Monday.

    ReplyDelete
  41. oh dear me...you poor thing...
that looks really hard to get out too...

    ReplyDelete
  42. Jodie, tell the doctor you think it's advanced Smurfitis!! You clearly need hospital treatment involving cakes and fine wines until it all wears off! Six weeks should do it!

    Oh THOSE instructions!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Quite funny! Thank you for the tutorial! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahaha!!!!

    What Trashy said......hahahahahahaha!!

I think the phrase 'there but for the grace of God go I' - that is soooooo what I would do :-)

  46. LOL - I hope it doesn't take too long to fade :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Oh dear!!! So you'll be wearing rubber gloves next time? My DH cleaned out our oven (I chose not to do it cause I was pregnant at the time!) and I got the cleaner and gloves... he said... nah, I'll be right... I don't need gloves... well.... that stuff is potent!! His hands peeled and fingernails started to flake and go weird as well!! I bet next time you'll all remember to wear gloves!!!! Anyone given you weird looks?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Oh Dear.....stiffling giggles here......try some bleach - either that or tell everyone you are trying out a new line of gloves....vbg.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I do like blue, I must admit. It's one of my very favourite colours. But not on hands. It makes you look slightly dead. Or as though you've had an elastic band round your wrist and it's cut off the blood supply to your hand. :-D

I hope whatever you were dying is worth it?! Perhaps lots of lemon juice, mixed together with some sugar or salt to exfoliate?

It did make me laugh though - thank you for that.

  50. You will be the talk of school tomorrow Jodie!!! You will never live it down I imagine.....

  51. HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, .....hahahaha....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.. oh, please, stop, I'm gonna pee my pants!... hahahahahahahahah..Haaaaaaa [finally composes herself]

Jodie, that's aweful for you. Hope you are ok.

  54. They sailed to the Western Sea, they did,
To a land all covered with trees,
And they bought an Owl, and a useful Cart,
And a pound of Rice, and a Cranberry Tart,
And a hive of silvery Bees.
And they bought a Pig, and some green Jack-daws,
And a lovely Monkey with lollipop paws,
    And forty bottles of Ring-Bo-Ree,
And no end of Stilton Cheese.
Far and few, far and few,
    Are the lands where the Jumblies live;
Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,
And they went to sea in a Sieve.

    You're a Jumbly. Nice x

  57. Are you trying to turn into an OOmpah Loompah!!What about if you stick your hand in bleach to remove the stain.....oh that's right you should wear rubber gloves to handle bleach!!!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Loud laughter here too... only because it's good to know I'm not the only muppet who does things like that!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Sorry, but that is hilarious!

  62. Love the blog! Sorry about your hand :)

    ReplyDelete
  63. I so hope you managed to come up with a great explanation of sickness that you could take a couple of days off work, rest up and craft. Almost worth jumping in the dye I think.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Guess this is one of those occassions when you wished you had read the directions first [giggle].

I can just imagine the delight you have given the children at school this week. Too funny!!

  69. Wow, this is giving me a flashback to a piece I wrote for my student union magazine way back when, about how dyeing jeans in your washing machines could lead to giving your boyfriend blue balls... I don't remember exactly what the logic was!

I had another huge coincidence the other week - I had my first market stall at Made 'N Thornbury and was next to Pepperberry & Co, and realised I'd shown her how to use the auto needle threader in your PVC wallet workshop at the fair! I was the one who brought little baby Jack along.

I've got a making-friends giveaway on my blog this week if you'd like to check it out. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  70. Coincidence! I've just had a bizarre experience with blue dye myself.

I was wearing new pants and the dye leaked onto my legs. My Mum freaked out because she thought I'd cut off the circulation or something! ^_^

    ReplyDelete
  71. The blueish hands may fade quickly but I think the knuckles and around your nails may be that way for quite a while..... on the brighter side it is winter and you can wear gloves.

    ReplyDelete
  72. :D nice blog post. At least it'll show to the world how crafty you are. I'm loving the elephant too.

  73. Hi, just surfing some blogs and came upon yours. there was an old Dick Van Dyke episode about he and Laura accidently dying there hands black or brown. Right before they went to an awards ceremony for some (colored) black folks. It was a funny show. I was just reminded of it. Habe a good one!

  74. I did this too! Im glad to know that i am not the only one!
