Getting stuff wrong

I am a firm believer that getting stuff wrong is part of the long and winding and often diverting path to getting stuff right. That’s not to say I enjoy getting stuff wrong but I am getting better at accepting (through gritted teeth) that my ideas of wrong often make little or no sense and they may add days or weeks or months to certain projects but they will not be ignored. It’s just better to go with it.
Before I went to Portland I was working on a project but simply ran out of time to get it off to the testers and finalised.

and that's a good thing because when I got home it just didn’t look right. This girls eyes were too big (This is her second head transplant by the way).
She needed new hair, but her body was alright so off to the transplant clinic for her…

but her friend looked funny…so it was of with her head as well.
I remade them both and dressed them and accessorised them and………………blah.
They are fine but I can’t show them here because you will all tell me they are fine or you might even tell me they are great. But ‘fine” is just not quite right enough is it? This morning I am starting again from scratch. I have thrown all the pattern pieces away, I have a cake in the oven and I’m thinking it will end up OK.20130624_121220
I’ll keep you posted.

  1. The last picture looks like a new definition of "head shop".

  2. I don't think the eyes are too big, they seem to far apart to me. If they were in a bit or maybe just one of them is out more than the other. I can't work it out but they seem too far fro the centre of her face.
Keep trying because they always turn out so cute! We love your patterns in our house, although I do seem to have a backlog of "Muuummmm, make this one for me now!!!"
At least if you get invaded by head shrinkers you ca escape by throwing your NQR ones at them as you crawl through the nearest window.

  6. I love the jar of heads. They always say 2 heads are better than one, so are 4 heads better than 2??

  7. Um the heads on sticks is a little disturbing. Looking forward to seeing the finished product though!

  9. Yep - I'm having a not-quite right day here. Lots of calico being thrown about. But yes... it will all be ok, and so much better than if we accepted 'fine'.

  10. I think it's her right eye (the eye on the left in the picture). I am not sure but I think it is too far out. And I think the mouth is too small or the wrong shape, most of your dolls seem to have the eyes line up with the curve of the mouth (ie if you continued the natural curve of the mouth up you would cross over the eyes). I am really bad at faces so I often take note of how others get them to look right :)

I love love love the jar of heads, you need a poster of London Bridge to sit behind the jar though :)

  11. Nae heid but still walkin - I know the feeling.

no, fine won't do. When your usual standard is brilliant (that's your usual standard) fine is quite a climb down and won't do.

Inspiration will strike - it always does for you, sooner or later - but what a lot of hard graft in the meantime!

  17. I'm a firm believer too, though like you I'm still not great when things don't.
I think it's the head thing, and toy thing, perhaps it's easier to get very personally involved.
I dunno, good luck, you'll get there x

  18. My favorite part of this post is the jar of heads.

Though I don't know that I could keep that around in my own space....they sort of look like they'll swivel around and watch you.

Well, now I've creeped my own self out. ;)

  20. Great bouquet of heads, just needs a ribbon to hold them together :)

And I agree that the eyes are not too big, just too far apart and asymmetrical.
    Great, though :)

  21. Well, so long as you have cake... It's a strange thing that when you are making something, somehow you just know when it works and when it doesn't. So what I suggest is...let it alone for a bit, settle down with cake and a glass of wine...and maybe another glass of wine to keep the first one company...and when you've almost emptied the bottle all the heads will look fabulous dahlink! :)
