After quite a bit of faffing about in the land of bookface, asking for opinions, I was able to move forward with the bear guy that sprang up just before Christmas.
You know, I think the thing about toys is trying to make something that looks like the real shape of animal , but also looks appealing… a kind of compromise between a really truly representation of an animal and our idea of the animal.
(and of course the limitations of the person doing the actual making) I also think I think way too much.
So the Polar Brothers are born and I do really like them. Kind of real, and kind of cute and the best thing? that crazy Minky fabric makes them all touchable and rub-on-your-cheek lovely.
Please do ignore the gargantuanly headed deer who appears to have collapsed under the bears….
He just can’t stand on his own two feet.
They look amazing Jodie. Now all they need is a knitted scarf!
ReplyDeleteI think they're amazing!
ReplyDeleteThey look awesome!
ReplyDeleteWell, if a toy designer from Australia is going to successfully take on the design of a bear, something that does not exist in her country, I'd say you are the woman for the job. Well done! I love the Polar Brothers!! Excuse me while I fashion a stuffed kangaroo.
ReplyDeleteLiar. Who is your photo stylist? Come on - cough up woman! Those bears surely can't be that cute in real life.
ReplyDelete"Call the Po-lar Brothers. Call the Po-lar Brothers." That theme tune will be in my head all day now. (Is the Koala Bros shown in Aus?)
ReplyDeleteFabulous, Jod! We once had an exchange student from Greenland living with us for a year; I told Majken about the earthquake drills we used to do at school in NZ and she told us about polar bear drills, but couldn't remember if you were supposed to run away/stand still if a polar bear came towards you (not useful!) I'd definitely be running TOWARDS your new creations!
ReplyDeleteThese polar bears are so sweet.Very appealing indeed.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry - I just can't ignore that poor deer. Somebody please help him.

ReplyDeletethese polar brothers are real cute. In breaking news (to quote someone back in Jan of last year) I have finally begun my rag rug. After much tooing and froing it is now about 12 inches in something. Thanks for starting me off. Cherrie
Beary appealing Jodie! I'm a fan of soft minky fabric as well. I got some off Emma late last year and have made some baby blankets for our soon-to-be-born grandchild. It does have that hold it to your face appeal.
ReplyDeleteI love baby bear. Cute.
My my my. Love those polar bears. My sister in law calls Minky fabric "polyester lithium"
ReplyDeleteSo cute Jodie
ReplyDeleteCool polar bears!
ReplyDeleteBears are great, and you still crack me up.
ReplyDeleteThose bears certainly have the rub on your face quality about them. Thanks for yesterday Jodie, I've started a quilt!
ReplyDeleteThese bears are just sooo cute I'd love to pick one up and give it a big squeezy cuddle.
ReplyDeleteRosie xx
You continue to amaze me with your talent and cleverness-they are awesome
ReplyDeletethey are wonderful!
ReplyDeletePolar Bears!!! I love 'em! ;p
ReplyDeleteI love Polar Bears. I was just laughing at that last photo with the extra set of legs when I read your last sentence ha ha. Hope you are not near any fires.
ReplyDeleteThe Polar bears, I noticed, are a little acrobatic too! But I was also drawn to the paper with the oblong shape drawn on it, hmmmm? I always try to imagine what shape your animals are when they are flat? I will need to buy your owl pattern, and just be done with it. I think we have a few US stores that carry your genius. : D
